hey guys today we’ll talk a little bit about the sidekick or Yoko Getty in Japanese Yoko means sign Geddy means it actually means diarrhea but if you put it after the word Yoko it becomes kick so sidekick anyway don’t say the word Getty in Japan unless you actually have diarrhea but that’s a side note now when you do the side kick there are different parts of the foot that you can use I use something known as so cute oh so cool toe this is the Japanese character so cool means foot and toe means sword or blade it’s kind of similar to the shoe toe this part shoe means hand and this means again blade or sword so sword hand shuto and this part of the foot so cute oh so now that you know the part that you need to impact with here’s how you do it and I will use this in a second step one of the sidekick is to bring your knee up high then from here you need to have some external hip rotation in your supporting leg so look one bring it up high and to open up this leg which allows full range of motion in your hips then from here this is very important your heel needs to travel in a straight line towards the target this way it’s very common that you see this when people do the sidekick which is actually not a sidekick right it’s like a bad roundhouse kick or mushy Guinea so make sure that your leg travels in a straight line to do that you need to use this muscle the biggest muscle on the human body and since your muscles are elastic the more you can bring it up this way the more powerful your kick will be it’s like pulling a rubber band back and bam releasing it for a high impact and it doesn’t matter what height you kick it’s the same principle so you can do a high one Joe down right or chudan or get out same thing bring your knee up high twist to stretch this muscle and then go down or up up to you so how can we improve our mobility to be able to perform this kick let me show you first sit down in a squat now from here one leg goes out as if I’m touching to see if the water is cold or hot then slowly move now step behind your other leg center of gravity slow and turn around same thing on the other side turn around this is very good for strength and mobility especially for the side kick so try that one if you want to improve your side kick along with the correct technique my last piece of advice to improve the side kick is to practice if you only do a side kick once or twice a week you won’t get better you need to be able to be stay relaxed and loose and snappy in your kick it’s kind of like if you’re learning to drive a car right at first your soup stiff and you’re afraid of the traffic but then gradually after you hear or so you’re able to relax suddenly you can drive with one finger and talk on the phone it’s the exact same thing with the sidekick if you practice a lot you’ll be able to do it and stay relaxed and this is the key for key men that lasts split-second of fixation or impact in your sidekick but you need experience and practice just like driving a car eventually you’ll be confident in your skill and your sidekick will be smashed good luck

  1. Amazing, i still have some difficulties doing side-kicks. Anyway, can you make a video about Ushiro-Geri and how not to damage your knees when doing it in surfaces that don't slide so well?
    When turning I feel like i need to stop rotation so that i face the target i want to hit with Ushiro-geri, but that puts some force on my knee when i do it. Still don't know how to avoid that.

  4. The kick technique is taught excellent! In Taekwon-Do we hit with the heel though to concentrate the power to the smallest part you hit

  5. the kick is already very technical with those explanation. Why not just kick side -ward with the outer side edge or the heel of the foot as the impact point. Whether the leg stretch out straight or not as long as you kick that leg side-ward.

  8. Not many people could execute a Yoko Geri correctly as it ended up as a combination of a Yoko Geri and a round house kick. Slowing it down in all it's elements make it a very powerful and rather crisp elegent technique to practice . Liked your tutorial in explaining this!

  9. I’ve found what seems to work well with a yoko kekomi Geri is use kogeki 5, or 7 as it allows you to get a slide motion with the foot that’s planted. Kogeki 7 allows the hips to open making that thrust easier. At least that’s what works for me.

  10. Can you show us how to do the twist kick (backwards roundhouse) and what stretches to help with the external hip rotation?

  11. I cannot do side kicks due to stiffness in my pubic and hip regions. What should I do to improve my flexibility to do those kicks?

  14. Hi Jesse, pretty good tutorial, but You omitted to mention that the hill of the supporting leg should move towards the target aswell, which puts You in correct, most beneficial position to execute this kick; to be quite honest, I only came across one video that covers that.

  18. Sensei Jesse! Do you have any tips for using blocks in a fight or in kumite? Like the outside block (soto-uke?) and another blocks we use often in Kata.
    Just trying to rely on my reflexes alone doesn't work most of the time. Is there a trick to it?

  19. great videos. You've covered most kicks. Have you considered doing a kansetsu Geri vide? There do not seem to be many good videos of this technique which is particularly important in some kata.

  23. Hi Jesse, I've been studying Marshall arts for a while now, but one thing I always fall at is my punches, my teacher keeps telling me my punches are too soft and too slow, this there any way that I can improve them?

  25. Do you turn the supporting foot on both kekomi and kiage? I have received some contradictory instructions regarding this. I do it one way for some instructors and the other way for others.
