BUT IT DOESN’T COME WITHOUT IT’S HEALTH PROS AND CONS.>>FINDING OUT HOW MANY BODYBUILDERS THERE ARE IN MISSISSIPPI DEPENDS ON WHO YOU ASK. THERE COULD BE DOZENS, THERE COULD BE HUNDREDS. I DID A SHOW LAST YEAR IN TEXAS, IT WAS IN HOUSTON THE TEXAS STATES. GORDON WEIR IS A LONGTIME FIXTURE ON THE MISSISSIPPI BODYBUILDING SCENE. HE’S BEEN AROUND SINCE IT BEGAN, TRAINING BODYBUILDERS AND YOUNG KIDS ALIKE, AS WELL AS HOSTING BODYBUILDING SHOWS AND EXHIBITIONS, INCLUDING THE OLDEST BODYBUILDING SHOW IN THE STATE, THE MISSISSIPPI BODYBUILDING AND FIGURE CHAMPIONSHIPS.>>GORDON WEIR: THE SPORT ITSELF IS GROWING BECAUSE IT’S LENDING ITSELF OUT TO FIGURE FOR WOMEN, BIKINI FOR WOMEN, PHYSIQUE FOR WOMEN.>>NOW, INSTEAD OF BODYBUILDERS HAVING JUST ONE THING THEY CAN COMPETE IN – BODYBUILDING – THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT CATEGORIES TARGETED AT SEVERAL DIFFERENT BODY TYPES. THIS HAS OPENED UP THE SPORT TO A GREAT NUMBER OF NEW COMPETITORS, AND MORE MONEY. BUT NO MATTER THE CATEGORY, THE ATHLETES STILL HAVE ALL THE WORK TO DO.>>SANDERS: I START OFF IN THE MORNING. I DO ABOUT 45 MINUTES OR AN HOUR OF CARDIO. THEN I GO BACK IN THE EVENING BECAUSE I WORK AT A GYM DURING THE DAY, SO I MAY PIDDLE AROUND, I’M A PERSONAL TRAINER, I MAY PIDDLE AROUND DURING THE DAY, BUT IN THE EVENING IS WHEN WE REALLY WORKOUT HARD. WE GO IN, HIT WEIGHTS FOR ABOUT AN HOUR, THEN WE TURN AROUND, DO ANOTHER HOUR OR SO OF CARDIO. SO IT TAKES ABOUT 3 OR 4 HOURS A DAY, AND IT’S AN EVERY DAY THING. OUR CARDIO IS TREADMILL, ELLIPTICAL MACHINE, JUST GETTING YOUR HEART RATE UP, BURNING THE CALORIES. TREADMILL, ELLIPTICAL MACHINES, STAIRMASTER, STEP MILL, JUST SOMETHING THAT’S GOING TO KEEP THAT HEART RATE UP AND KEEP US BURNING THOSE CALORIES. AS FAR AS THE WORKOUT PART, WE COME IN, WE LIFT WEIGHTS, WE SIT DIFFERENT BODY PARTS, LIKE MONDAY’S CHEST AND TRICEPS, TUESDAY BACK AND BICEPS, WEDNESDAY LEGS, THURSDAY SHOULDERS, FRIDAY WE MAY DECIDE TO HIT ANOTHER BODY PART THAT WE HIT EARLIER IN THE WEEK. SATURDAY AND SUNDAY WE KINDA TWEAK EVERYTHIGN STILL WITH CARDIO, STILL ADD THAT CARDIO IN.>>AND IF YOU THOUGHT THE WORKING OUT PART WAS INTENSE, THE DIET PART IS EVEN HARDER WORK! MOST BODYBUILDERS EAT 6-8 MEALS A DAY IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP THEIR METABOLISM ROARING.>>SANDERS: MY FIRST MEAL, I GET 3 EGG WHITES AND A HALF A GRAPEFRUIT. MY NEXT MEAL, I GET FOUR OUNCES OF FISH WITH TWO CUPS OF BROCCOLI. MY THIRD MEAL IS, I GET FISH WITH A TABLESPOON OF FLAX OIL, PLUS 10 ASPARAGUS SPEARS. MY FOURTH MEAL I GET CHICKEN, CHICKEN BREAST WITH MY GREEN VEGGIES. FIFTH MEAL IS THE SAME AND MY LAST MEAL, I GET 6 EGG WHITES, AND THAT’S IT.>>AND THAT’S PRETTY MUCH EVERY DAY. DURING HARD CORE COMPETITION PREP, SOPHIA SOMETIMES EVEN SETS AN ALARM TO WAKE HER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO GET IN ANOTHER MEAL OF EGG WHITES WITH A SIDE OF BROCCOLI. OH, AND MOST OF THAT FOOD? IT’S PRETTY BLAND..>>SANDERS: I DON’T DO SALT. AS FAR AS SEASONING, I MIGHT DO SOME MRS. DASH, YOU KNOW, THAT’S WHAT I DO FOR MY SEASONING.>>EXTREME DIETING, BLAND FOOD, HOURS AND HOURS OF BRUTAL WORKOUTS A WEEK. CLEARLY THIS ISN’T SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. IN FACT, IT’S PROBABLY NOT FOR MANY PEOPLE.>>SEALS: IT JUST ALL DEPENDS ON HOW BAD YOU WANT IT. SOME PEOPLE JUST CAN’T HANDLE THE DIET. I MEAN, IT’S NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU USUALLY SEE, YOU DON’T USUALLY SEE WOMEN WALKING AROUND WITH MUSCLES, AND I LOVE BEING DIFFERENT.>>SANDERS: YOU HAVE THOSE PEOPLE WHO LOOK AT YOU WITH THEIR NOSE TURNED UP, YOU HAVE THOSE THAT LOOK AT YOU THAT’S REALLY EXCITED, THEY WANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING, THEY WANT TO ASK YOU QUESTIONS, BUT AGAIN, YOU GET A LOT OF NEGATIVITY BEHIND IT, BUT YOU AGAIN, THIS IS WHAT I LOVE TO DO, AND I’M NOT GONNA STOP DOING IT. AS LONG AS THE LORD ALLOWS ME MY HEALTH AND STRENGTH, I’M GONNA CONTINUE DOING IT.>>AND ONE MAN STILL DOING IT LONG AFTER OTHERS WOULD PROBABLY HAVE STOPPED IS MEL MCCOY.>>MEL MCCOY: I WAS ACTUALLY 47 YEARS OLD BEFORE I EVER TOOK THE STAGE. AND ONE THING I LEARNED ABOUT BEING 47, AND I CAN STILL APPLY THAT NOW, IS I DON’T THINK YOU’RE EVER TOO OLD TO IMPROVE YOUR BODY.>>SO HOW DOES A 47 YEAR OLD MAN SOMEHOW END UP AS A BODYBUILDER?>>MCCOY: I STARTED BODYBUILDING IN 93. I ACTUALLY STARTED WORKING OUT IN A GYM IN 82, AND AFTER 11 YEARS, I GOT TIRED OF LOOKING IN THE MIRROR AND SEEING THIS SAME THING EVERY DAY. SO, I WENT TO GORDON WEIR AND I SAID, PUT ME ON A BODYBUILDER ROUTINE. I WANT TO SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT. AND HE DID, AND I MADE SUCH DRASTIC CHANGES IN THE FEW MOTHS THAT IT BECAME CONTAGIOUS, PARTICULARLY AFTER COMPETING IN THE FIRST SHOW WHERE I HAD 4, 3 COMPETITORS BESIDE MYSELF AND I MANAGED TO BEAT ONE OF THEM, AND IT FIRED ME UP FOR NEXT YEAR. I WAS SO PROUD TO GET 3RD PLACE OUT OF 4 THAT I WAS ELATED AND IT MADE ME WANT TO COME BACK THE NEXT YEAR AND SO THE MINUTE I LEFT THE GYM, I WENT AND STARTED WORKING ON THE WEAK SPOTS AND THE NEXT YEAR I COMPETED AND THERE WERE 7 OF US AND I MANGED TO GET 2ND IN THE 2ND CONTEST. AFTER THAT I WAS HOOKED.>>THAT FIRST COMPETITION WAS A BUMPY ONE FOR MEL AS HE FUMBLED HIS WAY THROUGH THE BODYBUILDING LEARNING CURVE.>>MCCOY: I WENT INTO THE GYM EVERY DAY. I STARVED MYSELF TO DEATH, AND THEN I WOULD COME HOME AFTER WORKING OUT AND I WOULD ALWAYS BE IN TEARS FROM BEING EXHAUSTED BECAUSE I WAS STILL LEARNING HOW TO EAT. WHAT I WAS DOING WAS STARVING MYSELF. BUT AT THE END OF THE TRAINING AND WHEN I WENT ONSTAGE, I HAD LOST 14 POUNDS FROM 183 TO 169, AND I ALWAYS WONDERED HOW YOU GOT THE ABS, WELL I FOUND OUT. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS DIET DOWN. YOU HAVE THE ABS, THEY’VE ALWAYS BEEN THERE, YOU JUST NEVER SEE THEM.>>MEL SOON CAUGHT ON TO THE EATING THING, AND CREDITS IT WITH HIS CURRENT HEALTH.>>MCCOY: YOU HAVE TO FEED YOUR MUSCLES. THEY WON’T GROW IF YOU CONTINUE TO STARVE THEM, SO YOU FEED THEM AND YOU WORK HARDER. YOUR BODY BECOMES A WELL-OILED MACHINE. I EQUATE IT TO MAYBE THROWING COAL INTO A LOCOMOTIVE. I LEARNED TO EAT FOODS I NEVER THOUGHT I COULD EAT. THINGS I WOULD TURN MY NOSE UP. I REALIZED THAT IF I WERE GOING TO CHANGE MY BODY, I HAD TO LEARN TO EAT THEM. AND I THINK IT’S IMPROVED MY HEALTH BECAUSE I’M EATING SO MUCH MORE OF A VARIETY OF VEGETABLES THAN I EVER ATE AND I CHANGED THE WAY I COOK THINGS, AND IT’S HELPED, I THINK WITH BLOOD PRESSURE AND THINGS LIKE THAT, THAT I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE FACED IF I HADN’T BEEN IN THE SPORT.>>THE MENTAL SIDE EFFECTS OF THE SPORT ARE ALSO TOUGH TO BEAR. ONE THING MEL MENTIONS ARE THE SELF-DOUBTS. DID HE MEASURE UP?>>MCCOY: I THINK WE’RE ALL SOMEWHAT DYSMPORHIC. WE EITHER LOOK BETTER OR WORSE THAN WE THINK WE LOOK. WE NEVER LOOK EXACTLY LIKE WE LOOK.>>DYSMORPHIA IS WHEN SOMEONE IMAGINES A PROBLEM WITH THEIR BODY, OFTEN THAT THEY ARE TOO FAT OR TOO SMALL. IN THE CASE OF BODYBUILDERS, RESEARCH SHOWS THAT AT LEAST 10% OF THEM SUFFER FROM THIS PROBLEM AND ARE CONSTANTLY DOUBTING THEIR OWN SIZE. ANOTHER INTERESTING STUDY INVOLVING BODYBUILDERS CONDUCTED AT VANDERBUILT UNVERISTY SHOWS THAT MANY SUFFER FROM REVERSE ANOREXIA. WHEN YOU THINK OF ANOREXIA, YOU THINK OF FRAIL PEOPLE REFUSING TO EAT, AFRAID TO GAIN WEIGHT. IN THE CASE OF BODYBUILDERS, IT’S JUST THE OPPOSITE. THEY EAT MORE IN EFFORTS TO GAIN MORE LEAN BODY MASS, BUT EVEN WHEN SUCCESSFUL, BELIEVE THEIR SIZE IS INADEQUATE. MEL, ON THE OTHER HAND, SAYS HE HAS HIS OWN PROBLEMS TO OVERCOME.>>MCCOY: SWEETS! THAT’S MY NUMBER ONE ENEMY. I HAVE A FANG AS BIG AS A VAMPIRE. I CALL IT A SWEET TOOTH. I CAN’T GIVE IT UP. I TRY, BUT IT’S MY WORST ENEMY. I HAVE TO CARDIO A LOT EXTRA JUST TO GET RID OF IT. EVERYBODY HAS A WEAKNESS, THAT’S MINE.>>THROUGH IT ALL, MEL HAS HAD HIS FAMILY BY HIS SIDE, SUPPORTING HIM DESPITE THE NEGATIVE STEROTYPES AND SIDE EFFECTS. ESPECIALLY HIS WIFE.>>MCCOY: SHE HAD MORE PATIENCE THAN PROBABLY SHE SHOULD HAVE. AND I’VE SAID MANY A TIME THAT IF SOMEBODY DESERVED A TROPHY OTHER THAN ME, IT WOULD BE HER FOR PUTTING UP WITH IT. THE MOODINESS THAT I GET FROM DEPRIVING MYSELF OF DIFFERENT THINGS, WONDERING IF I LOOK GOOD ENOUGH TO GO ON THE STAGE.>>AND HE CAN’T THANK HIS KIDS ENOUGH. ESPECIALLY FOR THEIR TASTE IN MUSIC. THE COMPETITORS ARE STILL VERY BUILT, BUT THE EMPHASIS IS ON MUSCLE SIZE AND DEVELOPMENT. LEQUIDA SANDERS FROM EARLIER IN THE SHOW COMPETES IN BOTH BODYBUILDING AND PHYSIQUE. BOTH MEN AND WOMEN COMPETE IN THIS CATEGORY. ANOTHER STEP DOWN IS FIGURE. THIS CATEGORY IS WOMEN ONLY.
