Muscle-Building Workout and Diet

– [Interviewer] Hey Jon, we are here to see your gym and fridge. – Oh, I don’t wanna buy anything. (door slams) (laughing) – You’re here to see my gym and fridge? ♪ Might have a little dirt on my boots ♪ ♪ But I’m taking you uptown tonight ♪ ♪ Might have a little mud on my wheels ♪ ♪ But they gonna shine
when you up inside ♪ Come on in! (country rock music) – [Interviewer] All right, so we’re gonna start with your gym. – I try to workout as much as possible, and it could be five
days, it could be three, it could be anything. There’s just like little
things that get in the way with my touring schedule, recording. – [Interviewer] Do you ever
workout with anybody else? – Yes, I workout a lot
with my trainer, Cory. Come on in here. Cory Adams everybody. What’s up, man? When I’m on the road,
there isn’t a lot of time, because you’re traveling, or… Or there’s a lot of time. It just depends. It’s a weird schedule. Like regardless, there’s a
floor if you wanna workout. We can do push ups, you can
do planks, you can do sit ups, you can do jump squats, which are crazy. There’s so much you can
do to still work out and burn calories and build muscle. – [Interviewer] What do you like to bring out on the road to workout? – This gym is under my bus in the bay. Basically, you know… These are great for push ups. You can go down with this, pull it up. These are great ’cause
they go up to 52 pounds. You can click and kinda do whatever. One of Cory’s favorite. Gotta hold that up, just curls like that. These are, you know, the girl muscles. What’s up, ladies? – [Interviewer] Are there other places you workout besides the gym? – The driveway is super intense. It’s almost a half a mile,
and it has a straight decline, and then coming back to the
house, it’s always incline. And it’s brutally hot. Regardless of what time it is in the day. – [Interviewer] Were you
a fit kid growing up? – I was a kid that didn’t care about anything else but music. I didn’t really care about working out. I did it ’cause all my friends did it. – [Interviewer] What’s your least favorite part of the workout? – Legs are really challenging for me because I’m really tall. It’s just a lot of compression,
so if you get a trainer, that’s all you do is legs. So, I kinda got over that. – [Interviewer] What’s your fitness goal? – Look, I’m not tryin’ to
put up 500 anymore, you know? I’m just tryin’ to look fit. I kinda like looking
okay with the shirt off. You know, you can never
be like six by eight, but this will give you a good goal, too. And this is what it is, right here. A boat. Get you a boat. (cheerful country music) All right, so this is my boat. Centurion, it’s awesome. It’s for wake surfing and just
for like havin’ a good time cruisin’ around the lake. – [Interviewer] Do you do
a lot of physical stuff that’s not gym related? – Always. I got 15 acres that I’m always workin’ on. I got projects. I got bush hogs to fix. I’m tearing down woods right now, ’cause I got this huge oak tree, and I’m tryin’ to save it ’cause it’s the tallest
one on my property, so you have to clear all the… We call ’em sucker trees because they steal all the
nutrients from the big oak. We call it the big oak. That’s what kinda keeps my mind right, is stayin’ out here, and a lot of times, especially now, I don’t
get to be here a lot. – [Interviewer] Have you ever
done any fitness classes? – Dancing. Dancing’s really hard. You know, you gotta, you know… We did it for the
Heartache Medication video. Like how I plugged that, Jen? My publicist is like, “Yeah.” All right, here is the refrigerator. And let me tell you, we worked hard at it. We knew something was going down. So, I feel like the weather man. It’s gonna be blowing this way. – [Interviewer] So what staples do you always have in the fridge? – We always have the green lettuce. I don’t really wanna touch it because I’ve been touching
the ground and stuff. And broccoli, asparagus. – [Interviewer] Okay, what does your diet normally consist of when you’re at home? – Diet at home is ultimate
because Summer is cooking and I help, do dishes basically. We eat a lot of salad. We eat a lot of chicken. Barbecue always, really. And then when the power goes out, we can bake it in the oven because sometimes the power goes out because all the storms in Tennessee. We got a fantastic back
deck that has a grill on it and we’ll do anything from filets, elk meat, we love elk meat, it’s really good and very lean. – [Interviewer] Do you
hunt the elk meat yourself or do you buy it? – Yes, yes. I would never buy elk meat. I go hunting in Montana
and it’s a lot of fun. You know where it comes from and it’s nice to, you
know, harvest the animal and actually learn how to cook and eat it and use it for other things. – [Interviewer] What does
your everyday breakfast look like when you’re at home? – Everyday breakfast, oh, hope
I don’t break it, is eggs. Eggs, eggs, eggs. And we like hard boiled eggs too. I’ll bring the on the road. That’s an easy snack, it’s
not crazy bad for you, it’s got protein, so… – [Interviewer] What else do you snack on? – Well, chips and salsa. Pickles, I love pickles. Oh, my God, there’s pickles everywhere. I love it. Spicy pickles. – [Interviewer] What do you
eat if you’re hungry at 2am? – I try not to eat at 2am
and that’s really hard to do. String cheese kind of can help that. I’ve been cutting back on
a lot of bread and flour. Trying my best on the
road, it’s really hard. Even went to cauliflower pizzas. I burn a lot of calories on stage just ’cause it’s a lot of breathing and it’s a lot of moving, a
lot of pointing, you know. – [Interviewer] Do you eat before a show? – [Jon] It depends. I try not to eat before a show because it gives me more energy. – [Interviewer] What do
you eat for a cheat day? – Ooh, I love being bad. Hmm. Mexican for sure. – [Interviewer] Do you have a sweet tooth? – This my sweet tooth. Boom, coming in hot. Red Vines, licorice. – [Interviewer] Are those protein drinks? When do you have them? – I’ll have these after a workout. They’re pretty good. They’re not really bulky
and they got 30 grams and you don’t have to,
like, get the blender out. That’s just one of the most
annoying things for me. Or like, scooping protein in the water and just be like (exhales). I like this, kombucha. Like, I need a boost of energy, instead of, like, going to a Red Bull, this is really good at
it has probiotics, so. It’s gonna be a test for the fall tour ’cause I’m going to do 85 minute sets and so I know coffee is
really acidic I think and so tea might be a good alternative. – [Interviewer] Do you do
anything diet-wise for your voice? – Well, listen, lots of
water and vocal warmups. It’s like going to the
gym for your vocal cords and so having them super hydrated and always working them
out is very important. – [Interviewer] All right, it’s time for rapid fire questions. (upbeat country music) 7am workout or 7pm? – 7am. – [Interviewer] Squat or deadlift? – Uh, squat. – [Interviewer] Favorite song

or in the great outdoors? – The great outdoors, always, hey. – [Interviewer] Cardio or weights? – [Jon] Both. – [Interviewer] Big legs or big arms? – You gotta have legs, man. You can’t have just big arms. So I’ll go with big legs. – [Interviewer] Jacked,
cut, ripped, or swol? – Cut. – [Interviewer] If you
could work out with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? – Uh, if we’re going for
it, I’d workout with Arnold. He’s like the number one. And that’s my life, dawg. Working out, boats, tractors, mowing the grass and a cheap-ass pool. (laughs)
