Hi, I’m Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani. Today we’re
going to talk about the Body Mass Index also called the BMI. The BMI is
calculated as kilograms per meter squared and as far as I’m concerned, there’s only one
good use for the BMI and that’s in academic publications for assessing
female body size in eating disorder papers; it’s just a benchmark. It doesn’t
even work for male patients where the so-called percent IBW should be used
instead. But besides all this, it’s not a useful clinical parameter. A BMI doesn’t
tell you if you’re healthy or unhealthy, it doesn’t tell you whether you’re a
good person. It’s just a focus of unhappiness, of over-directed attention
to numbers, and potentially of shame. You have to look at the whole person.
